North Shore Day Trip Wednesday

Planning on heading up to the North Shore tomorrow after class to get some of the early fall colors. I know that the colors are only getting going but with the forecast looking so good I can't say no to a trip. Gonna hit Gooseberry for sure, try and get Tetagouche too or maybe head up to Lutsen or Grand Marais. I dont get out of class till 10:50 so I wont get up there till after 12:00 but should still have plenty of time to mess around up there. I also want to head out next Wednesday if the forecast is good, not sure if it will be to the North Shore again or somewhere else. Anyone have suggestions for other nice state/national parks around Minnesota? Preferably ones with rivers/streams/waterfalls or overlooks?

Jay Cooke State Park is a beautfil area, you have the St. Louis River along side you, plenty of photo ops along that area. I haven't been out that way just yet, so I can't say what the colors look like, but lookn at the DNR fall color map would say that about 10% of the trees have changed colors in the Jay Cooke area as of a day or so ago.

Went to Ely, Grand Marais, Two Harbors, and Duluth over Labor Day Wknd. Was really surprised to see all the red's on the trees. Some trees are completely red already. Yellows were just starting to show up. Last year I went up on Sept 26, and colors were just changing over. So we are about 3-4 weeks ahead of last year. I wonder if the 'warmer' weather will slow things down?

Thanks guys for the info. Probably check out Jay Cooke before heading farther north. Unfortunately they aren't updating their status on the DNR website.

Craig, I was thinking the same thing. But I suppose it hasn't been as warm up there as it has been down here. One of the parks on the DNR page said that the colors are changing despite the warm temps.

On Fri/Sat 9/4-9/5, it was warmer in Ely than it was in the metro. I thought I was going to Ely to chill out. Wrong!

Did you make it up there or bail with the low clouds? Melinda and I are heading to Nine Mile tomorrow morning for the weekend. Should be warmer than last year when we went up the first weekend in October.

Yep, I went up anyways. Got stuck in a back up on 35w. Took me 50 minutes to go 3 miles. Anyways, the edge of the cloud deck was around Hinckley and it was all sun from there. Hit Goosberry and Tetagouche. Tetagouche is a long, hilly hike but worth it as long as you're willing to do a little cimbing to get a good view of the falls. I would've hit Jay Cooke but I had to pick up a new memory card in Duluth and didnt feel like heading back south when I really wanted to get north. Gonna try to get out again next week, I wanna go to Temerance River and Grand Marais.
